Why Donate to Amref Health Africa?

When you make a donation to Amref Health Africa, you can be sure that your contribution will make a tangible difference to the health and lives of people across the continent. You can also count on our commitment to ensuring the highest standards of care, both for our community of supporters and for the communities we work with.

Amref Health Africa is Africa’s leading health NGO. We operate in more than 40 countries to sustainably strengthen health systems and remove the barriers that prevent people from accessing life-saving care. Our programmes – developed in partnership with communities – are people-centred, evidence-based, and designed to be sustainable.

And because we are an Africa-led organisation, we enjoy strong, trusting relationships with communities and decision-makers across the continent: meaning we can go further, reach more people, and drive change that truly lasts.

Amref Health Africa has been registered as a non-profit organisation of public benefit in Switzerland since April 2025. Amref Switzerland is part of the global Amref Health Africa family, which includes offices in eight African countries. A further nine offices in Europe and North America are primarily responsible for raising funds and brokering partnerships in support of our programme work.

In 2025, Amref partnered with communities in 43 African countries to create lasting health change, directly supporting more than 25 million people.

Because Amref Health Africa has only recently begun operating in Switzerland, we are not yet eligible for Zewo certification. However, we are putting in place everything we need in order to make the application as soon as we have the opportunity. This includes a commitment to:

  • Financial transparency: every year, we will publish our accounts so that you can see how and where funds raised are used – as well as the impact your gift will have.
  • Undergoing a full audit every year.
  • Using funds raised efficiently, effectively, and for their declared purpose: when you make a gift to Amref, you can be confident that it will have the greatest possible impact.
  • Complying with the highest standards of data protection, embodied by the Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (see below). We will never sell, share, or swap your personal details with other charities or to third parties for their own purposes.
  • Respecting our donors’ rights, wishes, and dignity, just as we respect the rights, wishes, and dignity of the people we support through our programme work. We will contact you as much, or as little, as you like, in the ways you want. If you change your preferences, we will act upon your wishes without delay: just let us know if things change.
  • Truthfully and accurately communicating about our work and its impact, so you can clearly see the difference your support is making.
  • Maintaining an independent board who declare any potential conflicts of interest.
  • Listening and learning: if we make a mistake, we will own up to it and apologise – and we will learn from the experience, so that we will do better next time.

Our donor care team is available to answer any questions you might have; simply contact us on +41 91 921 29 96 or at [email protected].

Amref Health Africa Switzerland will be eligible to apply for Zewo certification in 2027, and we will begin the process then. In the meantime, we are setting up our operations to comply with the 21 Zewo standards and laying the groundwork to ensure that we make the strongest possible application when the time comes.

We are committed to using your gifts wisely. We are proud to say that, in 2024, 89% of funds raised globally were allocated directly to programme activities. A small but essential part is used to support and strengthen the organisation and secure further funding to prepare it for the future – ensuring that your gift has long-term impact.

From protecting infants against deadly diseases, to supporting people who have experienced sexual or gender-based violence, we promise to be honest, accurate, and transparent in how we work.

With some exceptions – namely emergency appeals in response to a particular health crisis – donations are not allocated to particular countries or programmes. Rather, they are used where they can have the greatest impact.

  • Anticipation: Unrestricted funding allows Amref to plan and prepare for all eventualities: to expect the unexpected. It creates a pool of funding that we can draw on when something unforeseen happens, allowing us to guarantee the continuity of vital services. What that means in concrete terms is that, across the continent, community members can turn up to their local health facility and know they will receive the same standard of care they have come to expect.
  • Reactivity: Unrestricted funding means we can react at the first sign of a public health emergency – COVID-19, mpox, Marburg Virus, Ebola, and sudden-onset climate-related crises like flooding or drought – mobilising the resources and people required for a fast and effective response. This ability to prepare for and respond to emergencies is increasingly important as the world faces the twin threats of pandemics and the climate crisis.
  • Agility: Unrestricted funding makes us a nimbler organisation. It means we can adapt, quickly, to the evolving needs of the communities we serve. If something is working well, we can scale it up; if it’s no longer needed, we can wind it down.
  • Independence: Unrestricted funding lessens our reliance on institutional partners, freeing us up to develop programmes in response to needs articulated by the communities we serve. When a particular country or area of need has fallen off donors’ radars, it means we can keep working in that place, or to address that challenge.
  • Innovation: Unrestricted funding allows us to innovate, as we keep finding new ways to bridge the gap between people and services. It means we can (responsibly) test new approaches, and scale up what works.
  • Longevity: Unrestricted funding means we can implement long-term projects that create sustainable, systemic, generational change. We know that lasting change – especially changes to beliefs, norms, and deeply-rooted behaviours and practices, such as our work to end FGM/C and child marriage – takes time. It can’t be rushed.

By donating to Amref Health Africa, a non-profit organisation of public benefit (CHE-280.368.643), you can claim a tax deduction of up to 20% of your income on your federal taxes. Similar provisions apply in most cantons. Be assured that we will provide you with the necessary donation certificate by March of the following year.

Ensuring data protection is a top priority at Amref Health Africa at a global level. As such, it is a concern for all members and employees in Switzerland. We adhere to strict policies to safeguard personal information. Amref does not disclose addresses to third parties, nor do we engage in renting, selling, or exchanging personal data. Our practices align with relevant data protection regulations, notably the Federal Data Protection Act.

You can download our privacy policy here.

Amref Health Africa Switzerland has partnered with face-to-face fundraising agency Corris to increase awareness of our work in Africa and to raise money so that we can do more of that work. They will generally suggest that you support us on a monthly basis. Regular gifts like these allow Amref to maintain its independence, react quickly as needs evolve, and plan for the future with confidence – ensuring that we are there for communities as long as they need us.

Our fundraisers wear jackets marked with the Amref logo as well as ID badges showing their full name, photo, and employee number.

They will never ask you to make a cash donation.

All Amref Health Africa staff sign a Code of Conduct that sets clear expectations of their behaviour and conduct. A similar Code exists for all associated personnel, including trustees and other volunteers. Amref Health Africa does not tolerate abuse: whatever form it takes, wherever it occurs, or whoever is responsible. Our robust safeguarding and child protection policies are reviewed every year, and are accompanied by clear and confidential processes for reporting concerns.

We are always delighted to hear from supporters or those with an interest in our work. You can contact us by phone on +41 91 921 29 96 (Monday – Friday from 9am to 12pm, and from 1pm to 5pm Swiss time) or via email at [email protected].
